SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-606.1  from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-606.1

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. For the purposes of issuing license plates indicating that the holder is a retired member of the General Assembly, provides that "retired member" means any individual who was elected to serve as a member of the General Assembly, served as a member of the General Assembly for at least one full term, and has retired.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
5changing Section 3-606.1 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-606.1)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-606.1)
7    Sec. 3-606.1. Retired members of the General Assembly.
8Upon receipt of a request from a retired member of the General
9Assembly, accompanied by the appropriate application and fee,
10the Secretary of State shall issue to such retired member
11plates bearing appropriate wording or abbreviations indicating
12that the holder is a retired member of the General Assembly.
13Such plates may be issued for a 2 year period beginning January
141st of each odd-numbered year and ending December 31st of the
15subsequent even-numbered year. Except as otherwise provided in
16this Section, upon the death of a retired member who has been
17issued a retired member of the General Assembly plate, that
18member's surviving spouse shall be entitled to retain the
19plate so long as the surviving spouse is a resident of Illinois
20and transfers the registration to his or her name within 90
21days of the death of the retired member.
22    A retired member of the General Assembly who has a
23disability as defined under Section 1-159.1 may request one

1set of specialized plates which display the International
2Symbol of Access and shall be subject to the provisions within
3Section 3-616. The set of specialized plates displaying the
4International Symbol of Access shall only be issued along with
5the assignment of a corresponding disability placard that must
6be displayed in the vehicle. The surviving spouse of the
7retired member shall not be entitled to retain this plate.
8    "Retired member" means any individual who:
9        (1) was elected to serve as a member of the General
10    Assembly;
11        (2) served as a member of the General Assembly for at
12    least one full term; and
13        (3) has retired. (a) has served as a member of the
14    General Assembly for a minimum of 6 years, or (b) is 62 or
15    older, has served as a member of the General Assembly for a
16    minimum of 4 years, and retired prior to the convening of
17    the 83rd General Assembly.
18    The fees and procedures relating to such plates for
19retired members of the General Assembly shall be the same as
20the fees and procedures applicable to personalized plates
21issued under this Code.
