HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Mujeres Latinas en Acción
4on the 50th anniversary of its founding; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mujeres Latinas en Acción was founded in 1973 by
6the late Maria Mangual and a group of dedicated women as a
7shelter for young women escaping violence in the Pilsen
8community, the first program of its kind; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 1982, Mujeres Latinas en Acción established
10the Healing and Prevention of Domestic Violence program,
11providing a culturally competent model of services for
12survivors of domestic violence; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In 1987, Mujeres Latinas en Acción created the
14Parent Support Program to address the needs of families that
15were in the child welfare system, including providing a
16support group for parenting skills; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In 1988, Mujeres Latinas en Acción continued
18building upon its history of collective leadership by
19developing the Latina Leadership Program, which has trained
20and graduated hundreds of women community leaders and
21organizers; and

1    WHEREAS, In 1992, Mujeres Latinas en Acción began its
2Sexual Assault Program, providing culturally and
3linguistically competent therapy, case management, and
4counseling; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In 2002, Mujeres Latinas en Acción expanded its
6family support services in partnership with the Illinois
7Department of Family Support Services to create the only free
8Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange program designed
9specifically for Spanish speaking, low-income families; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In 2009, Mujeres Latinas en Acción established
11the Community Engagement and Mobilization Program to bring the
12voice of Latina immigrants and survivors of trauma to the work
13of immigrant and women's coalitions; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In 2012, Mujeres Latinas en Acción established
15Empresarias del Futuro, a program to help Latinas create
16businesses and unlock their entrepreneurial potential; and
 
17    WHEREAS, That same year, Mujeres Latinas en Acción
18received funding and created a national initiative to assist
19and advise organizations around the country to increase
20programming and capacity to help address and prevent
21gender-based violence in Latina communities; and

1    WHEREAS, Mujeres Latinas en Acción's services have
2expanded beyond Pilsen to sites in Brighton Park and North
3Riverside; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we congratulate Mujeres Latinas en Acción on its 50th
7anniversary of providing innovative and empowering services
8for Latinas; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to Mujeres Latinas En Acción as a symbol of our
11respect and esteem.
