HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Bruce Layton on the
4occasion of his retirement from Northwestern University after
521 years; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Bruce Layton has served as special assistant to
7the president of Northwestern University since September 2002;
8prior to that, he served as director of Government Relations
9beginning in September 2000; and
 
10    WHEREAS, During his career, Bruce Layton has increased
11collaborations with and support from government entities,
12resulting in extraordinary gains for Northwestern University's
13mission; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Bruce Layton has been instrumental in securing
15more than $250M in direct state and federal appropriations for
16research projects and infrastructure on both Northwestern
17University's Chicago and Evanston campuses; he also opened the
18university's first Washington, D.C. office and the first
19government relations office in Chicago; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Bruce Layton has served as a dedicated advocate
21for students and faculty, building collaborative alliances

1with external organizations to increase federal and state
2funding for research and education and to improve access to
3higher education for underrepresented students; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Bruce Layton has helped strengthen ties with
5community groups and other institutions and has been active in
6higher education associations; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Prior to his longstanding career at Northwestern
8University, Bruce Layton distinguished himself in government
9and academic-government relations in the City and State of New
10York; he also served as a member of the White House Domestic
11Policy Staff during the Carter administration; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Bruce Layton earned his bachelor's and master's
13degrees from New York University; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Bruce Layton has been an extraordinary colleague
15and advocate, and his tireless work has enhanced the health
16and welfare of the Northwestern University community and
17beyond; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we congratulate Bruce Layton on his retirement from
21Northwestern University and wish him the best of luck in his

1future endeavors; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to Bruce Layton as an expression of our esteem and
4respect.
