SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Ozzie Mitchell of Joliet, who passed away on November 4, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Ozzie Mitchell was born in Millry, Alabama to Charles and Ruth (May) Mitchell; he graduated from Koenton High School and attended St. Petersburg College; he settled in Joliet in 1969; and

WHEREAS, Ozzie Mitchell retired from Caterpillar Inc. in 1999 following 30 years of dedicated service; he was also a former police officer in Miami, Florida; and

WHEREAS, Beginning in 1969, Ozzie Mitchell was the executive director of the Peter Claver Center, which provided tutoring, food baskets, Christmas for Tots, a food pantry, youth mentoring programs, job placement, and a training facility for inner city youth; he founded the Shorei go ju Martial Arts Academy and was a sensei and an international martial arts instructor; and

WHEREAS, Ozzie Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Derrick Mitchell; his sisters, Ollie Johnson and Dolly Myers; his brother, Charles "Bud" Mitchell; and his brothers-in-law, San Myers, Jimmy Johnson, and Samuel Washington; and

WHEREAS, Ozzie Mitchell is survived by his wife of 50 years, Peggy (Williams) Mitchell; his children, Ozzie Mitchell Jr., Zena Mitchell, Nicole Davis, Nancy Edmonds, and Marcus Mitchell; his brothers, Riley (Linda) and Jerry Mitchell; his sisters, Bertha Washington, Janie (Cleophus) Stephens, and Edith (Carl) Lyles; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and an extended family of friends and loved ones; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Ozzie Mitchell and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ozzie Mitchell as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
