SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. Yam Shun Tong, who passed away on
4September 25, 2019 at the age of 71; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong was born on December 29, 1948 in
6Hong Kong; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong was a longtime Oak Park resident
8and a Chicagoan through and through; he became a fanatic of the
9championship-winning 1985 Bears; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong married Cindy, a physician's
11assistant at Doctors on Wheels in Chicago and the surrounding
12suburbs; they had two children, daughter San, a social media
13manager for the video on demand streaming service of the TV
14network Hallmark Channel in Los Angeles, and son Kevin, a
15mechanical engineer for the leading energy consultancy in
16Chicago, 360 Energy Group; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong graduated with a Bachelor of
18Science in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois
19Chicago, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Northwestern University,
20and a medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic
21Medicine in 1987, making him a double doctorate; and

1    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong was the OB/GYN department
2chairman of PCC Wellness at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park
3for over 15 years, as well as a dedicated physician for over 35
4years; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong offered amazing care to
6expectant mothers and many patients; he had a reputation for
7his compassionate bedside manner and his patient-first
8mentality; he was known to rush into the office when a patient
9was presenting acutely to provide immediate care or a referral
10that would meet their needs; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong worked tirelessly, whether on a
12busy clinic day where he typically ended his days in the clinic
13with evening call hours for his obstetric patients or on a
14scheduled day off, although he considered himself to be on call
1524 hours a day, seven days a week; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong was the "go-to" person for all
17doctors at West Suburban Medical Center because he offered
18personalized care while still being a role model; he was sought
19out for his expertise on gynecological issues, complicated
20cases, and uninsured patients; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong was supportive of all his

1colleagues and, in turn, received respect for his wisdom and
2expertise; he leaves a legacy that will continue in the lives
3he touched and the community that he called family; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong was preceded in death by his
5parents and four of his siblings; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Yam Shun Tong is survived by his wife, Cindy;
7his children, San and Kevin; and three of his siblings;
8therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Dr. Yam Shun Tong and extend our sincere condolences to his
12family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Dr. Yam Shun Tong as an expression
16of our deepest sympathy.
