SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Ruth F. Luthringer of Oak Park, who passed away on August 8, 2019 at the age of 95; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Luthringer was born on July 6, 1924 to Charles Ferrill and Ethel Powell; she grew up in Berea, Kentucky during the Great Depression; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Luthringer attended Berea College; she then earned her master's degree in sociology from Columbia University in New York; she became a social worker and was active throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Luthringer married John Lewis Luthringer with whom she had four children; among her many joys in life, her family was her greatest; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Luthringer volunteered with numerous charities in her community and continued this work well into her 90s; she was passionate about donating her time to the community; she served as treasurer of the Oak Park and River Forest High School board from the early 1970s to 1980 and taught English at Taipei University from 1988 to 1989; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Luthringer continued her education in the arts; after her children left for college, she took classes in painting and photography; she was skilled in both arts, but photography became her passion; among her photographic accomplishments, a photo she took is on permanent display in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago; she also became the personal photographer for President Jimmy Carter when he worked with Habitat for Humanity in the Midwestern states; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Luthringer was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Ferrill and Ethel Powell; her siblings; her husband, John Lewis Luthringer; and her second child, George; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Luthringer is survived by her children, John, Virginia, and David; her six grandchildren; and her two great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Ruth F. Luthringer and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ruth F. Luthringer as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
