SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Harriet McLaughlin Rose of Mahomet, formerly of Charleston, who passed away on August 5, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was born in Sparta to Harry and Nina (Lindsay) McLaughlin on February 23, 1934; she was proud of her Randolph County roots and was a member of the Sparta band, a Sparta cheerleader, and a nominee for the homecoming court during her freshman year; she moved with her family to Fairfield to finish high school and was a member of the band, the cheerleading captain, and the recipient of the Outstanding 4-H Member Award for the State of Illinois, which earned her a trip to the national 4-H convention; she was also instrumental in creating the Fairfield water safety lifeguarding program, which continues to be used today; she attended the University of Illinois, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and the women's synchronized swimming team and, during her freshman year, was nominated for Homecoming Queen; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Rose began her career in higher education at the University of Michigan; she then worked as the assistant to the Dean of MacMurray College; she later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield and a master's degree in business administration; she began working as an administrative director at Eastern Illinois University and retired in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was a lifelong Republican and the chair of the Morgan County Republic Women during the Cold War; during this time, she traveled extensively, including a trip to Russia as a guest of the Deputy US Ambassador to the Soviet Union; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Rose developed a lifelong love for tennis when she lived in Jacksonville and was known to drop everything to watch a Grand Slam final; during her Charleston years, she was a proud member of the OBS ladies club, taught business classes as an adjunct for Lake Land College, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church; she was knowledgeable about classical French antiques and had a keen eye for decorating and fashion; she enjoyed the arts, particularly art museums and Broadway shows; during retirement, she enjoyed attending the University of Illinois Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's classes on current events and writing, which inspired her to conduct research and compose My Southern Illinois Heritage, a memoir for her family; she attended many University of Illinois Alumni Association and Eastern Illinois University work alumni events; she believed that anyone could do anything they put their mind to; she loved her grandchildren, who affectionately called her "HaHa"; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Nellie Wineland; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Rose is survived by her son, Illinois State Senator Chapin (Camille) Rose; her grandchildren, Jack, Annie, Kira, and Grace; her sister, Mabelle Wexler; her brother-in-law, Gene Wineland; her nephews, Tom (Audrey) Wineland and Tom Hirte; her niece, Stacy Given; and many other relatives; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Harriet McLaughlin Rose and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Harriet Rose as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
