SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Harriet McLaughlin Rose of Mahomet,
4formerly of Charleston, who passed away on August 5, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was born in Sparta to Harry and Nina
6(Lindsay) McLaughlin on February 23, 1934; she was proud of her
7Randolph County roots and was a member of the Sparta band, a
8Sparta cheerleader, and a nominee for the homecoming court
9during her freshman year; she moved with her family to
10Fairfield to finish high school and was a member of the band,
11the cheerleading captain, and the recipient of the Outstanding
124-H Member Award for the State of Illinois, which earned her a
13trip to the national 4-H convention; she was also instrumental
14in creating the Fairfield water safety lifeguarding program,
15which continues to be used today; she attended the University
16of Illinois, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority
17and the women's synchronized swimming team and, during her
18freshman year, was nominated for Homecoming Queen; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose began her career in higher education
20at the University of Michigan; she then worked as the assistant
21to the Dean of MacMurray College; she later earned a bachelor's
22degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield and a
23master's degree in business administration; she began working

1as an administrative director at Eastern Illinois University
2and retired in 2002; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was a lifelong Republican and the
4chair of the Morgan County Republic Women during the Cold War;
5during this time, she traveled extensively, including a trip to
6Russia as a guest of the Deputy US Ambassador to the Soviet
7Union; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose developed a lifelong love for tennis
9when she lived in Jacksonville and was known to drop everything
10to watch a Grand Slam final; during her Charleston years, she
11was a proud member of the OBS ladies club, taught business
12classes as an adjunct for Lake Land College, and was a member
13of the First Presbyterian Church; she was knowledgeable about
14classical French antiques and had a keen eye for decorating and
15fashion; she enjoyed the arts, particularly art museums and
16Broadway shows; during retirement, she enjoyed attending the
17University of Illinois Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's
18classes on current events and writing, which inspired her to
19conduct research and compose My Southern Illinois Heritage, a
20memoir for her family; she attended many University of Illinois
21Alumni Association and Eastern Illinois University work alumni
22events; she believed that anyone could do anything they put
23their mind to; she loved her grandchildren, who affectionately
24called her "HaHa"; and

1    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was preceded in death by her parents
2and her sister, Nellie Wineland; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Harriet Rose is survived by her son, Illinois
4State Senator Chapin (Camille) Rose; her grandchildren, Jack,
5Annie, Kira, and Grace; her sister, Mabelle Wexler; her
6brother-in-law, Gene Wineland; her nephews, Tom (Audrey)
7Wineland and Tom Hirte; her niece, Stacy Given; and many other
8relatives; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Harriet McLaughlin Rose and extend our sincere condolences to
12her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Harriet Rose as an expression of our
16deepest sympathy.
