SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of John D. Miller of Monticello, who passed away on May 15, 2019; and

WHEREAS, John Miller was born to Essell and Helen (Cook) Miller on December 12, 1952; he graduated from Monticello High School in 1971; he served in the United States Army as an E-6 Staff Sergeant in Germany; he served as a military police officer in the National Guard Army Reserves for 26 years, spending 15 of those years in an instructor role; he married Karen David on July 20, 1978; and

WHEREAS, John Miller served as a police officer in Decatur and as police chief in Argenta; he was then hired by the Monticello Police Department, where he was named chief in October 1995; he held that post until his retirement in 2012; he was known for his forward thinking and was the first to make sure defibrillators were available in each squad car; he was also involved with the DARE Program; and

WHEREAS, In recent years, John Miller enjoyed serving as an alderman on the city council; he believed in justice, compassion, loyalty, and tradition and served both his community and country by those standards; and

WHEREAS, John Miller's love for his community and country was only exceeded by his love for his family and friends; he enjoyed spending time outdoors, camping, hiking, hunting, bicycling, and spending time with those he loved; he was committed to his family and enjoyed serving and helping others, especially helping families through disaster relief organizations; he strived to be loyal, kind, and honorable to everyone he met; and

WHEREAS, John Miller was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Christina; and

WHEREAS, John Miller is survived by his wife, Karen; his daughters, Stephanie (James) Stevens and Kelly Miller; his grandsons, Brock and Clayton; and his brothers, Ron (Kathy), Gary (Jeanie), and Terry (Mary); therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of John D. Miller and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John Miller as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
