SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of George W. Makela of Waukegan, who passed
4away on July 15, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, George Makela was born in Waukegan to Oiva and
6Edna Makela on August 26, 1922; he was a true Bulldog and
7graduated from Waukegan High School in 1942; after graduation,
8he joined the United States Marines, where he became a
9Sergeant, and served during World War II; years later, he was
10honored to join fellow World War II veterans on an Honor Flight
11to Washington, D.C.; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Following the war, George Makela worked at the
13family store, Makela's Grocery, with his father; he also
14refereed basketball in Lake County for 15 years;; he later
15retired from Copley Newspaper as a classified ad manager; and
 
16    WHEREAS, During retirement, George Makela enjoyed playing
17golf and meeting his friends at The Sunset House and The Avalon
18for morning coffee; he and Jean also spent many winters in
19Ahwatukee, Arizona, where they spent time with their son and
20his family; he took great pride in his son's accomplishments;

1    WHEREAS, George Makela was preceded in death by his parents
2and his brother-in-law, Len Huber; and
 
3    WHEREAS, George Makela is survived by his wife of 72 years,
4Betty Jean; his son, Rob (Kathy) Makela; his grandchildren,
5Scott (Kelly) Makela, Ted Makela, and Kiirsti (Dan) Kamrath;
6his great-granddaughters, Kaari and Kamy Makela; his
7great-grandson, RJ Kamrath; his friends, Clyde and Helen
8Fawcett, Peggy (T-T) Fawcett, the entire Fawcett family, and
9the Louis Ross family; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12George W. Makela and extend our sincere condolences to his
13family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of George Makela as an expression of
17our deepest sympathy.
