SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Bernard Martin "Bernie" Judge, who passed
4away on June 12, 2019 at the age of 79; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bernie Judge was born to Bernard A. and Catherine
6Halloran on January 6, 1940; he was raised on the South Side of
7Chicago, one of four children; and
 
8    WHEREAS, After his father accepted a transfer to offices in
9the area, Bernie Judge moved to Oak Park at the age of 15 and
10attended Fenwick High School, graduating in 1957; while in
11school, he also had a part-time job at a grocery store; he
12attended various colleges, including the University of Dayton
13and John Carroll University in Ohio; he then transferred to the
14University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he majored in
15English; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In 1962, Bernie Judge was drafted into the U.S.
17Army and sent to a Nike missile site in Pennsylvania; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Bernie Judge married Kimbeth Wehrli on July 9,
191966, and they settled in Barrington, where they raised their
20children Kelly, Bernard R., and Jessica; and

1    WHEREAS, Bernie Judge worked for the City News Bureau of
2Chicago in 1965 before joining the Chicago Tribune in 1966,
3where he would become metro editor; he then became the editor
4and general manager of the City News Bureau before taking the
5job of associate editor of the Chicago Sun-Times; in 2001, he
6became the publisher of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin; after
7his retirement, he co-authored a book titled "Chicago's Lake
8Shore Drive: Urban America's Most Beautiful Roadway"; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Bernie Judge will be remembered by many for his
10journalistic integrity throughout his career; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Bernie Judge was a member of the Fenwick High
12School and Chicago Journalism halls of fame; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Bernie Judge was preceded in death by his parents;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Bernie Judge is survived by his loving wife of
16more than 50 years, Kimbeth; his three children; and his
17grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Bernard Martin "Bernie" Judge and extend our sincere
21condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved

2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Bernie Judge as an expression of our
4deepest sympathy.
