SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Donald Alfred "Don" Oppenheimer of Moline, who passed away on August 25, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Don Oppenheimer was born in Moline to Alfred and Nina Oppenheimer on January 27, 1928; he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII; he earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University; he married Nancy Haddick on March 24, 1951, and she preceded him in death on November 1, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Alongside his grandfather Fred Harrington, Don Oppenheimer co-founded the Harrington Signal Company in Moline; he worked with his brothers Ed and Gene for 57 years; he retired in 2008; and

WHEREAS, Don Oppenheimer served on the Salvation Army Board for more than two decades; he also served on the boards of the former Lutheran Hospital and the First Congregational Church; he was a member of the Moline Rotary Club for over 50 years; and

WHEREAS, Don Oppenheimer was known for his unwavering honesty, kindness, fairness, and generosity; he enjoyed watching wildlife from his porch, dancing with his wife at special occasions, and attending family vacations at Crystal Lake, Michigan; he was a remarkable caregiver for his wife Nancy when she became ill; he will be remembered for his strong love for his wife, family, and home; and

WHEREAS, Don Oppenheimer was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Oppenheimer, and his brother, Edward "Ed" Oppenheimer; and

WHEREAS, Don Oppenheimer is survived by his children, John (Nancy) Oppenheimer, M.D., Linda (partner, Troyleen Brown) Oppenheimer, M.D., and Susan (Brett) Owen; his grandchildren and their spouses, Laura Oppenheimer and Daveed Tuck, Karl Oppenheimer, Oliver and Anna Owen, Pete and Stacey Owen, Charles and Rachel Owen, and Emily and Lucas Adams; his great-grandchildren, Emerson and Del Odom, Aubryn and Chase Owen, Austin and Driston Owen, and Lucas and Lyla Owen; his brother, Gene (Deanna) Oppenheimer; and his sister-in-law, Ellen Oppenheimer; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Donald Alfred "Don" Oppenheimer and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Don Oppenheimer as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
