SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Mayor Aaron T. Shepley of Crystal Lake,
4who passed away on May 4, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley grew up in Crystal Lake; he
6graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1985; he earned
7his Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law
8in 1988; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley served as general counsel for
10Centegra Health System from 2002 to 2018; he served as vice
11president and senior associate general counsel at Northwestern
12Medicine from 2018 until his death; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley spent two years as a Crystal Lake
14city council member from 1997 to 1999; he was first elected
15mayor in April 1999; he served in that position for over 21
16years until his death, making him the city's longest serving
17mayor; during his tenure, he worked to recruit businesses to
18fill the city's vacant storefronts, particularly along Route
1914; he championed the efforts for a united city council that
20worked together for the purpose and vision of making Crystal
21Lake a great place to live; and

1    WHEREAS, Outside of politics, Mayor Shepley co-founded the
2Crystal Lake Strikers in 2008, a summertime drum corps for
3local adults that became one of the most popular entertainment
4acts in the Chicago area; since its founding, his organization
5has marched hundreds of miles in local parades, performed in
6front of millions of people, appeared live on television
7multiple times, and donated thousands towards college
8scholarships; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley was involved in a number of
10organizations, including serving on the advisory committees of
11the Raue Center for the Arts and Shaw Media Illinois; he
12enjoyed sports, bicycling, action photography, and playing
13drums as part of the five-person band What About This?; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley will be remembered as a tireless
15public servant who advocated for his community as well as a
16deeply committed family man; his legacy serves as an
17inspiration for residents and businesses alike to further serve
18their community; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley is survived by his wife, Regan
20Daniels Shepley, and his daughters, Chase and Madison;
21therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Mayor Aaron T. Shepley and extend our sincere condolences to
3his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
4further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Mayor Shepley as an expression of
7our deepest sympathy.
