HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Allison
4Cate Hartman of Chicago, who passed away on November 13, 2019;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Allison Hartman was born to James Lea and Frances
7Cohn Cate in 1931; she attended the University of Chicago
8Laboratory Schools and graduated from the University of Chicago
9in 1951; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Allison Hartman had an immense interest in
11automotive mechanics and sports car racing; she built a Formula
12Junior-class race car with her first husband, George Clowes;
13her immersion into the racing community was ironic, considering
14her aversion to driving and that she did not have a license for
15the last 60 years of her life; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In 1964, Allison Hartman and her second husband,
17James Hartman, opened Hyde Park Auto Service, which she ran
18until 1996, one of the first women in Chicago to operate an
19automobile repair shop; she and James competed on the Sports
20Car Club of America circuit; and
 
21    WHEREAS, In the 1970s and 1980s, Alison Hartman shifted to

1motorcycle racing and participated in dirt-track competitions
2around the country with her partner John Millington, who
3survives her; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Allison Hartman was a strong advocate for
5self-defense, earning a Hakkoryu Jujutsu black belt in 1988;
6she co-founded a self-defense training program, Power for
7Women; she was an accomplished bench rest target rifle-shooter
8and won competitions well into her 80s; and
 
9    WHEREAS, After closing Hyde Park Auto Service, Allison
10Hartman earned a criminal justice degree from Chicago State
11University and two post-graduate degrees from John Marshall Law
12School; she was reportedly one of the oldest people in Illinois
13history to pass the bar in 2006 at age 75, after which she
14practiced elder and real estate law; she also rehabilitated and
15restored several South Side buildings with her son, James; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Allison Hartman was president of the board for
17Disabled Adult Residential Enterprises; she was a founding
18member of Chicago Hyde Park Village, an organization that helps
19its members to remain in their homes and engaged in the
20community as they grow older; she was president of the Older
21Women's League and a founder of the Coalition for Equitable
22Community Development; she was a long-term board member of the
23Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference; and

1    WHEREAS, Allison Hartman was preceded in death by her son,
2James Russel Clowes; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Allison Hartman is also survived by her son,
4Daniel Clowes; her daughter-in-law, Erika Clowes; her
5grandson, Charles Clowes; her brother, James L. Cate Jr.; and
6her students and "adopted" children, Julie Orlinsky-Morgan and
7Jesse Sensibar; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we mourn the passing of Allison Cate Hartman and extend our
11sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
12and loved her; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Allison Hartman as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
