HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in
4the lives of Illinois leaders; and
 
5    WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Peoria City
6Councilman At-Large Eric Turner is retiring after 24 years of
7elected municipal service to the City of Peoria; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner is a proud Peoria native,
9growing up in the Warner Homes on the south side of Peoria and
10attending high school at the historic Spalding Institute; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner is an U.S. Army veteran, having
12served in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967; he remains active in Peoria
13veteran's affairs activities and leads the coordination of
14Peoria's annual Memorial Day celebration at the Gateway
15Building on the Peoria Riverfront; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner received a bachelor's degree in
17management from the University of Illinois in 1982 and a
18master's degree in marketing from DePaul University in 1986;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner began his professional career

1at Caterpillar in 1968, where he worked in both the marketing
2and human resource departments; his most notable role was as
3marketing manager, where he was praised for his strategic and
4problem-solving abilities; he retired from Caterpillar in 2010
5after 41 years of service; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner was first elected as an At-Large
7Peoria City Councilman in 1995 and was re-elected for five
8additional terms; as councilman, he demonstrated excellent
9leadership abilities and a strong passion for the improvement
10and growth of Peoria; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner attended the annual Regional
12Neighborhood Network Conference with a delegation of Peoria
13neighborhood leaders, and he played the leading role in hosting
14the 2014 RNNC event in Peoria; his neighborhood dedication has
15been commemorated with a City of Peoria neighborhood award
16named in his honor; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner helped launched the East Bluff
18Rebound basketball program in 2009, where he served as referee,
19scorekeeper, and chief motivator for young adults in East
20Bluff; his leadership skills and dedication helped to create
21the East Bluff Community Center at Saint Bernard's School; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner has held monthly early-morning

1breakfast chats with neighborhood leaders in room 112 at City
2Hall, and he is respected by volunteers and neighborhood
3organizers throughout Peoria; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Councilman Turner has served as deputy mayor,
5Peoria Liquor Commissioner, and council liaison to numerous
6civic organizations; he is the most tenured member on the City
7Council and has been firmly committed to his constituents; he
8has dedicated his public service career to the protection of
9neighborhoods and the promotion of economic development;
10therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we commend Eric Turner for 24 years of public service on the
14Peoria City Council and offer best wishes for a well-deserved
15retirement; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Councilman Turner as a symbol of our respect and
18esteem.
