HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of
3Chicago is one of the largest networks of healthcare,
4education, and human services in the country, bringing
5assistance to over 500,000 Chicago-area residents of all faiths
6and to millions of Jews around the world; and
 
7    WHEREAS, As the President for over four decades, Dr. Steven
8B. Nasatir has provided landmark leadership both within the
9Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Chicago and
10internationally and has raised more than $8 billion to provide
11help, hope, and healing to individuals, families, and
12communities in need; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Nasatir has inspired generous donations from
14the Jewish community in the wake of natural disasters, war, and
15famine, including visiting Haiti after the devastating
16earthquake of 2010; and
 
17    WHEREAS, As a passionate supporter of Israel since its
18early days of statehood, Dr. Nasatir has sought to help in
19times of peace and war, has met with nearly every Israeli Prime
20Minister, and has befriended world figures, including Natan
21Sharansky and Elie Wiesel; and

1    WHEREAS, In the face of threats to Jews around the globe,
2Dr. Nasatir has shaped the response of the United States and
3the American Jewish community through advocacy and through
4committing community resources, most notably the exodus of more
5than a million Jews from the former Soviet Union and the rescue
6of Jews from Ethiopia and Yemen; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In the face of challenges to Israel's very right
8to exist and in response to the surge in anti-Semitism
9domestically and abroad, Dr. Nasatir became an early and
10articulate champion of speaking out in the United States
11Congress, the Illinois General Assembly, Chicago City Hall, and
12on campuses throughout the Midwest against the Boycott
13Divestment and Sanctions movement; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we commend Dr. Steven B. Nasatir for his more than four decades
17of leadership and service within the Chicago Jewish community,
18where he has always acted with great care and integrity,
19following the principle of Kol Yisrael arevim zeh l'zeh - we
20take care of each other; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to Dr. Nasatir as an expression of our esteem and
23respect.
