HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Christ Temple Baptist
4Church on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1959, Rev. Princeton H. McKinney noticed a
6building near the intersection of 162nd and Wood Boulevard in
7Markham and was inspired to found a church; on May 9, 1959, he,
8along with other congregants, founded the Christ Temple Baptist
9Church; and
 
10    WHEREAS, By the fall of 1963, the existing building was
11becoming too small to accommodate the growing membership; the
12building was expanded and plans were made to construct a new
13church; the ground breaking ceremony for the new building took
14place April 22, 1964, Palm Sunday; in August 1964, the first
15service at the new church was held; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Memorial services for Dr. Martin Luther Jr. were
17conducted beginning in 1970 and continued throughout the years;
18the church's concern for civil affairs is well documented with
19photographs taken of many elected public officials speaking at
20the church, including the late Mayor Harold Washington,
21Presidential Candidate Jesse Jackson, and many others; and

1    WHEREAS, Christ Temple Baptist has always been concerned
2not only with the spiritual well-being of its worshippers but
3with their total well-being and has created programs,
4activities, and ministries to serve their members and the
5community; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we congratulate the Christ Temple Baptist Church on its 60th
9anniversary, and we wish them many more wonderful years; and be
10it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to Christ Temple Baptist Church as a symbol of our
13respect and esteem.
