HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the American Hungarian
4Family Society on the occasion of its 100th anniversary on May
54, 2019; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The American Hungarian Family Society began in
71919 when families migrated to Bloomington from Austria and
8Hungary and settled on the northwest side of town, known as the
9Forty Acres; most residents in this neighborhood worked for the
10Alton Railroad; the families would meet at someone's house
11every Saturday, roll back the rug, play some music, and dance;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, The first organizational meeting was held at the
14West Side Clothing Store in January 1919; and
 
15    WHEREAS, On April 15, 1919, the officers purchased a lot at
161520 Calhoun Street in Bloomington; on September 12, 1919, the
17Society borrowed $3,500 from the American State Bank to pay for
18the building; this was a large undertaking, and four or five of
19the members used their homes as collateral; the building was
20erected by the original 100 members themselves and still stands
21at 1520 Calhoun; and

1    WHEREAS, Twice a year, members of the Society hold sausage
2suppers and sell Hungarian sausage made from scratch by its
3members to raise money to support the organization; although
4there have been some changes, including opening membership
5beyond those related to the original founding families, most of
6the Society's traditions have stayed the same for 100 years;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, The American Hungarian Family Society will be
9celebrating its 100th anniversary with a dinner and dance on
10May 4, 2019; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we congratulate the American Hungarian Family Society on the
14occasion of its 100th anniversary, and we wish them many more
15successful years; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the American Hungarian Family Society as an
18expression of our esteem and respect.
