HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

2    WHEREAS, In the United States, a woman's lifetime risk of
3being diagnosed with ovarian cancer is 1 in 78; and

4    WHEREAS, The five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is
546.5 percent; survival rates vary greatly depending on the
6stage of diagnosis; and

7    WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates 864 cases of
8ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in Illinois this year, and 587
9women will die from the disease; and

10    WHEREAS, Of all the counties in the United States, Illinois
11has four counties in the top 20 for highest death rates from
12ovarian cancer; and

13    WHEREAS, All women are at risk for ovarian cancer, but
14approximately 20 percent of women who are diagnosed with
15ovarian cancer have a hereditary predisposition to ovarian
16cancer, which places them at higher risk; and

17    WHEREAS, While the mammogram can detect breast cancer and
18the Pap smear can detect cervical cancer, there is no reliable
19early detection test for ovarian cancer; and

1    WHEREAS, Many people are unaware that the symptoms of
2ovarian cancer often include bloating, pelvic or abdominal
3pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, urinary
4symptoms, and several other symptoms that are easily confused
5with other diseases; and

6    WHEREAS, The lack of an early detection test for ovarian
7cancer, combined with vague symptoms, means that approximately
880 percent of cases of ovarian cancer are detected at advanced
9stages; and

10    WHEREAS, The month of September is dedicated to increasing
11awareness of ovarian cancer, to acknowledging the women who
12have lived through and are living with this deadly disease, and
13to honoring the women we have lost; therefore, be it

14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
16SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare September 2019 as
17Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in Illinois; and be it further

18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the Illinois Chapter of the National Ovarian
20Cancer Coalition.
