SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
New Act

    Creates the Pangolin Protection Act. Prohibits the possession, sale, trade, and distribution of pangolin products. Establishes an exemption for organizations engaged in pangolin research or conservation. Provides that a violation is a Class A misdemeanor.

1    AN ACT concerning pangolins.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the
5Pangolin Protection Act.
 
6    Section 5. Definitions. As used in this Act:
7    "Pangolin" means any of the species of Manis pentadactyla,
8Manis javanica, Manis crassicaudata, Manis culionensis,
9Smutsia temminckii, Phataginus tricuspis, Smutsia gigantean,
10and Phataginus tetradactyla.
11    "Pangolin product" means any item that contains, or is
12wholly or partially made from, a pangolin.
 
13    Section 10. Prohibitions. Except as provided in Section 15,
14beginning 180 days after the effective date of this Act, it is
15unlawful to possess, sell, offer for sale, trade, or distribute
16a pangolin product.
 
17    Section 15. Exemption. The prohibitions under Section 10 do
18not apply to organizations engaged in pangolin research or
19conservation.
 
20    Section 20. Penalty. Unlawful possession or sale of
