SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/12-803  from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-803

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that a school bus may be equipped with an arm extension attached to the stop signal arm that may not extend more than 36 inches past the outermost part of the stop sign, may not exceed 4 inches wide, shall be made of aluminum or a polycarbonate material, shall be illuminated in red on both sides, and may not change the integrity of the school bus. Provides that, if a school bus is equipped with an additional stop signal arm on the rear of the bus, an arm extension may be attached, but it may not extend more than 12 inches past the outermost part of the rear stop sign.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing
5Section 12-803 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/12-803)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-803)
7    Sec. 12-803. (a) Each school bus shall be equipped with a
8stop signal arm on the driver's side of the school bus that may
9be operated either manually or mechanically. For each school
10bus manufactured on and after September 1, 1992, the stop
11signal arm shall be an octagon shaped semaphore that conforms
12to 49 C.F.R. 571.131, "SCHOOL BUS PEDESTRIAN SAFETY DEVICES",
13S5.1 through S5.5.
14    (b) Each school bus manufactured prior to September 1, 1992
15shall be equipped with a stop signal arm that conforms to
16standards promulgated by the Department.
17    (c) A school bus may be equipped with an arm extension
18attached to the stop signal arm. The arm extension may not
19extend more than 36 inches past the outermost part of the stop
20sign, may not exceed 4 inches wide, shall be made of aluminum
21or a polycarbonate material, and shall be illuminated in red on
22both sides. The arm extension may not change the integrity of
23the school bus.

1    (d) If a school bus is equipped with an additional stop
2signal arm on the rear of the bus, an arm extension may be
3attached. The arm extension shall meet all specifications
4outlined in subsection (c), except it may not extend more than
512 inches past the outermost part of the rear stop sign.
