Synopsis As Introduced Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that, commencing with the 2009 registration year, the registration fee paid by any vehicle owner who is a member of the armed forces of the United States on active duty shall be reduced by 50% of the fee otherwise provided in this Code for passenger cars displaying standard multi-year registration plates. Provides that widows, widowers, and parents of a deceased member of the armed forces of the United States, who was killed while on active duty, shall also be entitled to this reduced registration fee for the registration year in which the deceased member of the armed forces of the United States was eligible and for a period of 5 years thereafter. Effective July 1, 2008.
Further amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Deletes the bill's amendatory provisions concerning military personnel plates. Provides that, beginning with the 2010 registration year, the registration fee for passenger and certain other motor vehicles shall be reduced by 50% for any vehicle owner who was on active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States and stationed outside of the United States for a period of 90 days or longer during the preceding registration year. Provides for a credit for the unused portion of a motor vehicle registration for a vehicle owner who is a member of the armed forces of the United States and has been stationed outside of the United States for a period of 6 months or longer and who placed his or her registered motor vehicle in storage during the time that he or she served abroad. Provides that the credit shall be one month for each month or part of a month that the vehicle was in storage and had current registration.
