SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Nearly 700,000 people in the United States are
3living with a primary brain tumor, and more than 69,000 others
4will be diagnosed this year; brain tumors are often deadly,
5impact the quality of life, and change everything for patients
6and their loved ones; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Anyone can get a brain tumor, including persons of
8any age, race, gender, or ethnic origin; there are currently no
9standard prevention or early detection measures, very few
10effective treatments, and no cure; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Malignant brain tumors are among the deadliest
12cancers with just a 34% 5-year relative survival rate; brain
13tumors are now the leading cause of cancer death in children
14under the age of 14; even someone with a benign brain tumor
15faces a potentially life-threatening disease and may suffer
16from chronic neurological problems; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2015, an estimated 2930 people were
18diagnosed with primary brain or other central nervous system
19tumors; it is estimated that 950 of those were malignant;
20approximately 533 people from Illinois die annually due to
21brain or other central nervous system tumors; and

1    WHEREAS, There have been very few new brain tumor therapies
2approved in the last 30 years; critical research at the
3National Institutes of Health (NIH) is laying the groundwork
4for breakthroughs; the NIH is the primary source of funding for
5brain tumor research in the United States; private philanthropy
6cannot fill in for the key leadership role that the NIH plays
7in funding, coordinating, and advancing research, and no amount
8of private funding can replace the FDA's regulatory role in
9evaluating and approving new treatments; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The United States Congress needs to support public
11policies that strengthen brain tumor research, advance brain
12tumor research to new therapies, and ensure patient access to
13essential brain tumor treatments; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The National Brain Tumor Society is the largest
15nonprofit organization dedicated to the brain tumor community
16in the United States; as the leader in the fight against brain
17tumors, their initiatives and programs aim to improve
18understanding of brain tumors and to transform those findings
19into new and more effective treatments as quickly as possible;
20to achieve these goals, they foster collaboration with leaders
21across academia, government, and the private sector; and
 
22    WHEREAS, May of 2016 is Brain Tumor Awareness Month - a
23time to spread awareness about brain tumor facts, share

1knowledge, and call for new research and better treatments;
2therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 6, 2016
5as Brain Tumor Awareness Day in the State of Illinois and we
6encourage people to support the research being conducted to
7combat this deadly disease; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the National Brain Tumor Society as an expression
10of our esteem and respect.
