SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, South Asians are individuals who derive their
3ethnic origins from the Indian Subcontinent, made up of
4countries such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh; and
 
5    WHEREAS, South Asians hold a high risk of heart attack and
6stroke that has often been overlooked; this increased risk is
7due to a variety of factors, ranging from genetics to lifestyle
8choices; and
 
9    WHEREAS, South Asians are at 4 times greater risk for heart
10disease than the general population; amongst South Asian men,
1125% of heart attacks occur under the age of 40 and 50% occur
12under the age of 50; South Asian women have a 30% increased
13risk of heart disease when compared to Caucasians and a 325%
14increased risk when compared to the Chinese; South Asians make
15up 17% of the world population, but hold 60% of the world's
16cardiovascular disease burden; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The South Asian Cardiovascular Center is the first
18of its kind in the Midwest designed to serve the South Asian
19community; the aim of the Center is to educate, screen,
20prevent, and treat South Asians for their high risk of cardiac
21disease; and

1    WHEREAS, The South Asian Cardiovascular Center provides a
2combination of hospital and outpatient clinical services to
3assure individuals and their families a comfortable and
4culturally sensitive experience; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The South Asian Cardiovascular Center's outreach
6efforts are intended to inspire change and provide options to
7live a heart healthy lifestyle; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare February 10,
102016 as Cardiovascular Disease Awareness Day in the State of
11Illinois; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the South Asian Cardiovascular Center as an
14expression of our esteem and respect.
