SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of John A. Farrell of Alton, who passed away
4on August 26, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Farrell was born in Edgar County on February
627, 1929 to John E. and Bessie (nee Houston) Farrell; he served
7in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean
8War and was discharged in 1952; he graduated from the
9University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in
10Accountancy in 1955; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Farrell joined the Civil Service for the
12Internal Revenue Service, working as a Field Agent and later as
13an Estate Examiner; he attended law school at St. Louis
14University, earning his Juris Doctor in 1961; he was senior
15partner at Farrell, Hamilton & Julian, P.C. in Godfrey for 48
16years; he was a longstanding member of the Illinois State,
17Madison County, and Alton-Wood River Bar Associations; his
18writings appeared in publications related to continuing legal
19education and estate planning; he retired in 2013; and
 
20    WHEREAS, John Farrell was Treasurer of the Fosterburg Fire
21Department, a member of the Board of Directors for Mid-America
22Bank of Alton, and an active member of his local community; he

1and his wife were active members of 12th Street Presbyterian
2Church for 40 years, where he served as an Elder and Treasurer;
3after the church closed, they became members at Evangelical UCC
4Church in Godfrey; and
 
5    WHEREAS, For many years, John Farrell attended a weekly
6Bible study group; he grew a vegetable garden and stomped
7through briars to pick blackberries; he sent a weekly mailing
8of jokes to friends and family and enjoyed writing letters; he
9was consulted regarding the practice of law and mentored with
10the SCORE Program; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Farrell was preceded in death by his parents;
12his 2 brothers, William and James Farrell; and his
13granddaughter, Shelby; and
 
14    WHEREAS, John Farrell is survived by his wife of 56 years,
15Loretta (nee Richey); his 4 children, Toni K. and Jonathan
16Farrell-Higgins, Daniel E. and Alejandrina, Michael J. and Joan
17Farrell, and Jenifer A. and Trevor Farrell-Dreilich; his 10
18grandchildren, Elise, Clare, Meredith, Jade, Alexa, Eric,
19Shane, Ian, Riley, and John; his 2 great-grandchildren, Giana
20and Eden; his brother, Max Farrell; and his sister, Mary
21Napolis; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2John A. Farrell, and extend our sincere condolences to his
3family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
4further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of John Farrell as an expression of our
7deepest sympathy.
