SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to individuals who gave their
4lives in the line of duty; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Douglas County Chief Deputy Tommy K. Martin's last
6watch occurred on June 21, 2007, when he was shot while
7pursuing armed suspects fleeing a home invasion robbery; he
8held on to life until July 17, 2007, when he finally succumbed
9to his wounds while at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Chief Deputy Martin became an Illinois State
12Police Crime Scene Investigator in 1978; after retiring from
13the Illinois State Police, he served as Chief Deputy Sheriff of
14Douglas County beginning in 2004; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Chief Deputy Martin was a deacon of the Tuscola
16United Church of Christ; he was a member of the Tuscola Warrior
17Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1009 and Tuscola American Legion
18Post #27 and served in the United States Navy during the
19Vietnam War; he was posthumously awarded the prestigious Law
20Enforcement Medal of Honor in 2008; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Chief Deputy Martin is survived by his son; his

1daughter and son-in-law; a brother; and 3 grandchildren;
2therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
5CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Illinois Route 45 as it
6passes through Douglas County between Pesotum and Tuscola as
7the Tommy K. Martin Memorial Highway; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
9is requested to erect at suitable locations, and, in
10particular, the intersection of the "Hayes Road" and Illinois
11Route 45, consistent with State and federal regulations,
12appropriate plaques or signs giving notice of the Tommy K.
13Martin Memorial Highway; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
15delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
16Transportation and the family of Tommy K. Martin.
