HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Alice
4Martin, who passed away at the age of 75; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Alice Martin was a 1960 graduate of Alton High
6School; she attended classes on the Alton campus of Southern
7Illinois University Edwardsville; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Alice Martin worked for the Illinois Department of
9Public Health at the Alton Mental Health Center's Department of
10Human Services Mental Health Division activity department for
1125 years; she retired as a mental health technician after many
12years of service; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Alice Martin served as the Ward 4 Alton city
14alderwoman for 10 years; she was appointed to the seat on March
1522, 2006 after the resignation of Alderman Fred Young; she was
16the first alderwoman to serve on the Alton City Council since
17April of 1987 and stressed she wanted to be addressed as an
18"alderwoman" not "alderman"; after serving the remaining three
19years left in the unexpired term, she won a four-year term in
202009 and was re-elected in 2013; and
 
21    WHEREAS, As an alderwoman, Alice Martin was dedicated to

1the inner-city ward, working to fix sidewalks, streets, parks,
2and other aged infrastructure and on other quality of life
3measures, including crime and racial issues; she helped
4institute a ban on dogs in Hellrung Park and James H. Killion
5Park at Salu for safety reasons; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Alice Martin was a longtime Democratic Precinct
7Committeewoman and was active in the Alton Exposition
8Commission; she remained active in the Coalition of Concerned
9Citizens and worked at events with her husband to register
10voters; she also attended neighborhood meetings, Coffee with a
11Cop, and neighborhood watch groups to build up her community
12and reduce crime; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Alice Martin served as president of AFSCME Local
14124; she was also a member of the Illinois Association of
15Minorities in Government, the Illinois Democratic Women, and
16the Southern Illinois Democratic Women Network; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Alice Martin was preceded in death by two
18children; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Alice Martin is survived by her husband, Doug Sr.;
20her son, Jon; and a grandson; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

1NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
2we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of
3Alice Martin; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Alice Martin as an expression of our
6sympathy.
