HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Dr. Conrad Walter Worrill
4on the occasion of his retirement after 40 years of employment
5at Northeastern Illinois University as Professor, Department
6Chair, and Academic Program Coordinator, and 12 years as the
7Director of the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City
8Studies; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Conrad Worrill, an internationally-acclaimed
10scholar, educator, and activist, received his bachelor's
11degree from George Williams College, his master's degree from
12the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of
13Wisconsin; his major field of study has been black political
14and movement history, social theory, and curriculum and
15instruction, with emphasis on the delivery of social and
16educational services in the African American community; and
 
17    WHEREAS, For over 50 years, Dr. Conrad Worrill has been an
18active participant in the black power, civil rights, and human
19rights movements; he has served as the chairman of the National
20Black United Front for 26 years and is now the group's chairman
21emeritus; he was also the special consultant for field
22operations for the historic Million Man March, a lifetime
23member for the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in

1America, and a street organizer for Harold Washington's mayoral
2campaign; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dr. Conrad Worrill is a member of the Kemetic
4Institute, the Association for the Study of Classical African
5Civilizations, the Communiversity, the Universal Negro
6Improvement Association-African Communities League, and the
7Association of African Historians; he also served as a board
8member of the Black United Fund of Illinois for 30 years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Conrad Worrill's work has been nationally
10known since 1983 through a syndicated column in major African
11American newspapers around the country and his writings have
12appeared in numerous publications in the U.S.; he was a radio
13talk show host on Chicago's WVON Radio for over 10 years; he is
14also a knowledgeable and dynamic speaker and is constantly
15requested to lecture all over the world; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dr. Conrad Worrill's activism has been
17distinguished by his leadership in organizations and
18activities that have been at the forefront of social and racial
19justice, African-centered education, African liberation, and
20self-determination for people of African descent; he has
21advanced causes such as educational restructuring, human
22rights, reparations, and political empowerment for the black
23community; his life's work has demonstrated his commitment to

1"speaking truly and doing right"; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
4congratulate Dr. Conrad W. Worrill on the occasion of his
5retirement and thank him for his years of dedication and
6service to the communities he has helped throughout his career;
7and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to
9Dr. Conrad Worrill as a token of our respect and esteem.
