HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Eloise
4Harvey, who passed away on June 14, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Eloise Harvey was born on March 12, 1929; her
6parents were Minister Henry and Martha Jane Seals, Sr.; she
7married Louis Harvey, Sr. on December 2, 1952 in Tunica,
8Mississippi; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Eloise Harvey was baptized at an early age by Rev.
10McDonald in Mississippi; she was taught to sew by her mother, a
11skill which she would pass on to her daughters Helen and
12Patricia; she also worked as a beautician and assisted her
13father and uncles in running the family's grocery store and
14hotel; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Eloise Harvey and her husband relocated to Chicago
16in 1955; after attending Metropolitan Missionary Baptist
17Church, they moved west and she became a member of United Faith
18Missionary Baptist Church; in May of 1993, she became a member
19of the Maypole Avenue Church of Christ; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Eloise Harvey earned various educational
21certifications and community activist awards; she is also an

1alumnus of DePaul University and obtained special
2certifications in the Chicago Public School System; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Eloise Harvey retired from the Board of Education
4as a Social Service Aide in 1993 after many years of service;
5at her urging, Maypole Avenue was a host to Beat 1113 meetings,
6which she facilitated for many years; she served as President
7of the Parent Teacher Association at Marconi School and Vice
8President of the Parent Teacher Association at Austin High
9School; in the 1970s, she and others were responsible for the
10renaming of the Austin High School Auditorium to become the Dr.
11Martin Luther King Auditorium and she worked with the late Dr.
12Chetwyn Rodgers to prevent the closing of Austin High School
13and other grammar schools; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Through the efforts of Eloise Harvey, the Maypole
15Avenue Church of Christ became a polling place for her
16community; she has been a dedicated supporter of the Democratic
17Party all of her adult life and very active in the Chicagoland
18area; she canvassed voters and led get-out-the-vote campaigns
19on behalf of both the late Mayor Harold Washington and Rev.
20Jesse Jackson during his campaign for President; when she
21became unable to get out and make contact with the people, she
22would call them on the phone to tell them "Get Up and Get Out
23and Vote"; and

1    WHEREAS, Eloise Harvey was preceded in death by her
2parents; her siblings, J.D., Katherine, Nora, Ector, Eldridge,
3and Henry; her husbands, Mr. Ellis and Lee Miles, Sr.; her
4daughter, Louella; and her sons, Charles, Charlie, and
5Nathaniel; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Eloise Harvey is survived by her sons, Lee Miles
7Jr., Marcus M. Miles Sr., Kenny Ray Harvey, and Louis (Mozella)
8Harvey Jr.; her daughters, Diane A. Harvey, Katherine
9Harvey-Stevenson (John), Patricia Harvey, and Alderman Helen
10Harris; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and
11great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Eugene Seals; her
12sisters, Edna M. Nuell, Bessie M. Miles, and Stella B. Mayes;
13her brother-in-law, O.B. Harvey; her sisters-in-law, Wilada
14Harvey, Annie Bell Reese, and Mazora Seals; her special
15cousins, Minister James Wallace and Bertha Gage; and many
16nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of
20Eloise Harvey; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Eloise Harvey as an expression of
23our sympathy.
