HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On January 13, 1913, 22 young collegiate women at
3the campus of Howard University founded Delta Sigma Theta
4Sorority, Incorporated with a vision to improve their community
5through the committed constructive development of its members
6and to public service with a primary focus on the black
7community; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The sorority has observed their 100th anniversary
9in January of 2013 and has grown to become the largest
10African-American female organization in the world, with more
11than 200,000 college-educated women; and
 
12    WHEREAS, On January 10, 1976, the Springfield-Decatur Area
13Alumnae Chapter was chartered by 18 women who wanted to carry
14out the vision of the 22 founders; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter
16carries out the Sorority's Five Programmatic Thrusts of
17Economic Development: Educational Development, International
18Involvement and Awareness, Physical and Mental Health, and
19Political Awareness and Involvement in their programmatic
20efforts which serve the Springfield and Decatur communities;

1    WHEREAS, For the past 40 years, the Springfield-Decatur
2Area Alumnae Chapter has given unwavering service to the
3community by implementing programs such as La Petite Delta, the
4Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy, EMBODI, the Dr. Jeanne Noble GEMS,
5and programs to improve the physical and mental health of the
6community by offering workshops on financial fortitude,
7domestic violence, cancer awareness, and diabetes awareness;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter has
10performed many public service activities in the Springfield and
11Decatur communities for the past 40 years by volunteering at
12various social service organizations, raising funds to assist
13with important activities, and working with children and senior
14citizens; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter
16continues to encourages citizens to be active participants in
17the political process by holding voter registration drives,
18hosting candidate forums to educate citizens on those seeking
19office, and raising awareness of social issues which may affect
20the community; and
 
21    WHEREAS, The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter
22continues to grow in the Springfield and Decatur communities
23through 40 years of uncompromising commitment to our

1communities through service, leadership, and empowerment;
2therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5congratulate the members of the Springfield-Decatur Area
6Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for
7their 40 years of uncompromising commitment to our communities
8through their service, leadership, and empowerment of those
9they serve; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter of
12Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as an expression of our esteem and
13respect.
