HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Taffie
4Helleny of Herrin, who passed away on January 1, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Taffie Helleny was born in Herrin on April 23,
61923 to Joseph and Katie (nee Neckley) Helleny; he served in
7the United States Army during World War II in the European
8Theater; he graduated from the University of Illinois and
9attended Southern Illinois University (SIU); he married E.J.
10Craver on June 18, 1950; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Taffie Helleny was a longtime businessman in
12Southern Illinois; he was a partner in Helleny's Furniture in
13Herrin and Carbondale and co-owner of the Campus Shopping
14Center in Carbondale; he had also been Chairman of the Board of
15Home Federal Savings and Loan in Carbondale; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Taffie Helleny was a member of Herrin's Prairie
17Masonic Lodge No. 693, the Scottish Rite Valley of Southern
18Illinois, and the Ainad Shrine Temple of East St. Louis; he was
19the longest-serving member of Herrin Elks Lodge No. 1146; he
20was a member of the SIU Alumni Association and a strong
21supporter of the University; he attended First Presbyterian
22Church in Herrin throughout his life, but also maintained his

1membership in St. George's (Syrian) Orthodox Church in Terre
2Haute, Indiana; he regularly could be found dispensing advice
3with his friends at his favorite corner table at Quatro's in
4Carbondale; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Taffie Helleny was preceded in death by his
6parents and his 3 brothers, Louis, James, and Edward; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Taffie Helleny is survived by his wife, E.J.; his
8children, Joey Helleny, Jane (Craig) Herman, and Robert (Cathy)
9Helleny; his brother, Charles Helleny; his grandchildren,
10Kimberly (Shayne) Alexander and Rebecca and Mary Kate Herman;
11and numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14mourn the passing of Taffie Helleny, and extend our sincere
15condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
16him; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Taffie Helleny as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
