HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the
3members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened
4to learn of the death of Dr. Shirley Irene DuBois of
5Jacksonville, North Carolina, who passed away on February 18,
62015; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois was born in Chicago on August 6, 1938
8to Houston and Naomi (nee Evans) Gaines; she attended
9elementary and high school in Chicago and graduated from the
10University of Chicago Laboratory School; she then attended
11Chicago Teachers College (now Chicago State University) to
12fulfill her desire to become a teacher; she married Lee Andrew
13Pittman; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois worked in the Chicago Public Schools
15until her retirement in 1992; while working in the Chicago
16school system, she earned a master's degree from Northwestern
17University and a Ph.D. in public policy from the University of
18Illinois at Chicago; she later completed the Chicago
19principal's exam and was selected to become principal at Walter
20Gresham Elementary School; after completing a sabbatical
21leave, she taught reading to Title I students until her early
22retirement; shortly after retiring, she worked for 3 years as a
23staff development specialist for the Teachers Academy for Math &

1 Science; during her teaching career, she managed real estate
2property that she owned for over 30 years; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois and her children traveled throughout
4the United States, Mexico, Africa, and Asia; in retirement, she
5became active on the session for Second Presbyterian Church in
6Chicago, volunteering time to assist with various programs; she
7was active in educational groups; she was a life member of the
8National Alliance of Black School Educators, the Retired
9Teachers Association of Chicago, and the University of Illinois
10Alumni Association; she was a member and served several
11positions in Pi Lambda Theta, the University of Chicago
12chapter, an honorary educational society; she later served
13terms as Treasurer and as an international board member of Pi
14Lambda Theta; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois married Floyd DuBois in 2002; in 2004,
16they moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina to assist with
17caring for their 2 granddaughters until they graduated from
18high school and went to college; during their time in
19Jacksonville, they became members of Evening View Missionary
20Baptist Church and Covenant ARP churches; they also attended
21New Vision M.B. Church; while in Jacksonville, they worked with
22the Georgetown High School Alumni Association's "Annual Black
23History Writing Contest"; and

1    WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois was preceded in death by her parents
2and her sisters, Dorothy Gaines Gregory and Ramona Gaines
3Scott; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Dr. Dubois is survived by her husband, Dr. Floyd
5DuBois; her children, Andrew Pittman and Janet Pittman Reed;
6her granddaughters, Sheria Janelle Reed and Ayanna Janae Reed;
7her brother-in-law, Charles Gregory; her nieces, Rosemary
8Gregory Harmon and Cynthia Gregory; her 2 great-nieces; her
9special cousin, Sidney Edwards Cole; her special caretaker,
10Andrew Taylor; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14mourn the passing of Dr. Shirley Irene DuBois, and extend our
15sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
16and loved her; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Dr. Dubois as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
