HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is important to recognize those who contributed
3to the betterment of the State of Illinois through public
4service; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Suzanne Deuchler is a 60-year member of the Aurora
6branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW)
7and credits the organization with helping her accomplish many
8things in her life; she held 2 portfolios while with the AAUW:
9(1) Global Interdependence and International Relations; and
10(2) State Board of AAUW for Global Interdependence; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Suzanne Deuchler was a member of the Kane County
12Board from 1976 to 1980; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Suzanne Deuchler was elected to the Illinois
14General Assembly in 1980 and served for 18 years; during that
15time, she co-founded the Illinois Mathematics and Science
16Academy; promoted the Orchard Road/Toll Road Interchange;
17organized the Northeast Flood Project; supported water wells in
18surrounding towns; participated in the White House Conference
19on Small Businesses; co-chaired the General Assembly's
20Conference of Women Legislators; championed the ratification
21of the Equal Rights Amendment; received the Golden Apple Award
22from the Illinois Education Association; supported a

1business-friendly environment in Illinois; backed
2environmental legislation that promoted clean air and clean
3water; and spearheaded Kane County's establishment of the
4Nelson Lake Nature Preserve; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Suzanne Deuchler served on the boards of the
6following organizations: the National Alliance for the
7Mentally Ill, the Aurora Coordinating Council of Community
8Organizations, the Aurora Historical Society, the Kane-Kendall
9Mental Health Association, the Sci-Tech Museum, and the
10Rush-Copley Medical Center; she also served as President of the
11League of Women Voters; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Suzanne Deuchler graduated with honors in 1951
13from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Arts in
14Liberal Arts with a major in Spanish and a minor in speech; she
15received an honorary doctorate from Aurora University on June
166, 1999; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
19SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the Orchard Road
20interchange on Interstate 88 as the "Suzanne Deuchler Honorary
21Interchange"; and be it further
 
22    RESOLVED, That the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority is

1requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with State
2and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs giving
3notice of the name "Suzanne Deuchler Honorary Interchange"; and
4be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
6presented to the Chairman of the Illinois State Toll Highway
7Authority and Suzanne Deuchler.
