210 ILCS 85/11.7

    Amends the Hospital Licensing Act. In a provision that requires a hospital to provide information and instructional materials regarding sudden infant death syndrome, requires the materials to include information developed by the National Institutes of Health concerning safe sleep environments. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning regulation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Hospital Licensing Act is amended by
5changing Section 11.7 as follows:
 
6    (210 ILCS 85/11.7)
7    Sec. 11.7. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Education.
8    (a) A hospital shall provide, free of charge, information
9and instructional materials regarding sudden infant death
10syndrome (SIDS), explaining the medical effects upon infants
11and young children and emphasizing measures that may reduce the
12risk. The materials shall include information developed by the
13National Institutes of Health concerning safe sleep
14environments.
15    (b) The information and materials described in subsection
16(a) shall be provided to parents or legal guardians of each
17newborn, upon discharge from the hospital. Prior to discharge,
18a nurse or appropriate staff person shall review the proffered
19materials with the infant's parents or legal guardian and shall
20discuss best practices to reduce the incidence of SIDS as
21recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
22    (c) Nothing in this Section prohibits a hospital from
23obtaining free and suitable information from a public or
