SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-699.14 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for the issuance of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm license plates to any Illinois resident who has earned the Southwest Asia Service Medal from the United States Armed Forces. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5Section 3-699.14 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-699.14 new)
7    Sec. 3-699.14. Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm
8license plates.
9    (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of an application made in
10the form prescribed by the Secretary, may issue special
11registration plates designated as Operation Desert
12Shield/Desert Storm license plates to any Illinois resident who
13has earned the Southwest Asia Service Medal from the United
14States Armed Forces. The special plates issued under this
15Section may be affixed only to passenger vehicles of the first
16division, motorcycles, or motor vehicles of the second division
17weighing not more than 8,000 pounds. Plates issued under this
18Section shall expire according to the staggered multi-year
19procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of this Code.
20    (b) The design, color, and format of the plates shall be
21wholly within the discretion of the Secretary. Appropriate
22documentation, as determined by the Secretary, and the
23appropriate registration fee shall accompany the application.

1The Secretary may, in his or her discretion, allow the plates
2to be issued as vanity plates or personalized in accordance
3with Section 3-405.1 of this Code. The plates are not required
4to designate "Land of Lincoln", as prescribed in subsection (b)
5of Section 3-412 of this Code. The Secretary shall, in his or
6her discretion, approve and prescribe stickers or decals as
7provided under Section 3-412.
 
8    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
9becoming law.
