SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of George Morris, Jr., who passed away on
4June 15, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. was born on November 15, 1924,
6in West Frankfort; his parents were George Sr. and Laura
7Morris; he married Lola F. (nee Melvin) Morris in 1946, in
8Pickett, Arkansas; and
 
9    WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. served his country with pride
10in the United States Navy during World War II in the
11Asiatic-Pacific Theater; and
 
12    WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. began working in the coal mines
13in 1947 with the Franklin County Coal Company in Royalton; he
14subsequently worked for the Freeman Coal Company before
15transferring to the Peabody Coal Company in 1971; while working
16for Peabody, he worked as the safety manager at Eagle Mine in
17Shawneetown; in 1977, he began working at the Morris and Sons
18Coal Company as the personnel and safety director; his last
19employment was at Kenellis Energies Inc. in Galatia, where he
20worked out of the corporate office and handled all labor
21matters for the company; he also served as president of the
22local district of United Mine Workers of America and taught

1mine safety classes at Southeastern Illinois College; and
 
2    WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. served his community as a
3member of Denning Township Board and coached little league
4baseball when he was younger; he was also a member of West
5Frankfort Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5764; and
 
6    WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. was preceded in death by his
7parents; his wife, Lola; his sisters, Thelma, Ruth, and Maxine;
8his brothers, Vernon, Albert, Doyle, and Harold Morris; and his
9two infant siblings; and
 
10    WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. is survived by his daughter,
11Melanie (Gerald) Walker; his son, Rex (Linda) Morris; his
12grandchildren, Chad Robison and Jamiel Morris; and his
13great-grandchildren, Jordan and Hunter Robison and Kane and Nia
14Morris; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
17family and friends, mourn the passing of George Morris, Jr.;
18and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of George Morris, Jr. as an expression
21of our sympathy.
