HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Thomas D.
4Nyhan of Lisle, who passed away on November 7, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan graduated from the Loyola University
6Chicago School of Law in 1958 and joined the Chicago law firm
7of Pope, Ballard, Shepard & Fowle, Ltd., where he became one of
8the premier workers' compensation defense attorneys in the
9State; during his 35-year career with Pope, Ballard, Shepard &
10Fowle, he became senior partner and created a formidable group
11of workers' compensation attorneys; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In 1992, Thomas Nyhan went on to become a founding
13shareholder of Nyhan, Pfister, Bambrick & Kinzie, P.C.; he
14retired in 1994 but continued to consult with members of the
15firm on important issues over the years; with his guidance,
16Nyhan, Bambrick, Kinzie & Lowry has grown from a 9-attorney
17workers' compensation defense firm to a premier full-service
18defense firm handling multi-state civil litigation and
19Medicare Secondary Payer compliance service in addition to
20workers' compensation defense and employment; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan served for many years as the workers'
22compensation counsel to the Illinois Chamber of Commerce,

1providing his expertise and guidance on the law in negotiations
2and representation of employers in a professional and effective
3manner; and
 
4    WHEREAS, In 1982, Thomas Nyhan and his late wife, Donna,
5created a case precedent resource called Q-Dex for the Illinois
6workers' compensation community and, until recently, Thomas
7Nyhan remained active in Q-Dex, which is now presided over by
8his daughter, Suzanne; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan was very proud of the fact that he
10had read every workers' compensation decision of the
11Commission, the appellate courts, and the supreme courts for
12over 50 years; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan was active in numerous professional
14organizations, serving on the Attorney Registration and
15Disciplinary Commission of the Illinois Supreme Court, as
16Executive Secretary of the Illinois Self-Insurers Association,
17and as an Officer and Director of the National Council of
18Self-Insurers; he also was a Fellow of the American Bar
19Association and a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of
20America, the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar
21Association, and the International Association of Industrial
22Accident Boards and Commissions; and

1    WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan is survived by his wife, Joan Nyhan;
2his children, Thomas C. Nyhan, Esq., Larry J. Nyhan, Esq.,
3Dennis J. Nyhan, and Suzanne M. Nyhan, Esq.; his
4daughters-in-law, Beth Nyhan, Esq., Yukiko Nyhan, and Melanie
5Murphy; his grandchildren, Lauren Nyhan Macklis, Jason
6Macklis, M.D., Daniel and Lisa Nyhan, and Brendan, Dylan,
7Nicole, Patrick, Megan, Katherine, and Kara Nyhan; his
8great-granddaughter, Emily Macklis; and his step-children,
9grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we mourn the passing of Thomas D. Nyhan, and we extend our
13sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
14and loved him; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Thomas Nyhan as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
