2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Roosevelt Griffin on the | ||||||
4 | occasion of winning the Golden Apple Award for excellence in | ||||||
5 | teaching for his work as Band Director at Harvey School | ||||||
6 | District 152; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Since 1986, Golden Apple has been a leader in | ||||||
8 | advancing the teaching profession in Illinois for 29 years and | ||||||
9 | has recognized outstanding teachers throughout Illinois each | ||||||
10 | year; Golden Apple's selection committee is comprised of | ||||||
11 | prominent retired teachers, college and university professors, | ||||||
12 | administrators, and former Golden Apple Award recipients; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Roosevelt Griffin was born and raised in Harvey, | ||||||
14 | where he received his elementary education in Harvey School | ||||||
15 | District 152; he attended Riley Elementary and Gwendolyn Brooks | ||||||
16 | Middle School before attending Thornridge High School, where he | ||||||
17 | became an All-Conference athlete; he subsequently graduated | ||||||
18 | from Northern Illinois University, where he received an | ||||||
19 | Illinois Teaching Certificate in Instrumental Music and a | ||||||
20 | Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance; he later returned to | ||||||
21 | academics and received a Masters of Arts in School Leadership | ||||||
22 | in 2011 from Concordia University; he is currently pursuing a | ||||||
23 | Doctorate in Organizational Leadership at Argosy University; |

2 | WHEREAS, Roosevelt Griffin became Band Director of School | ||||||
3 | District 152 in 2004; during his tenure, the Harvey Band | ||||||
4 | Program has received great honors for its dedication to the art | ||||||
5 | of jazz and has received top ratings and accolades from all | ||||||
6 | around the country; under his direction, the Brooks Middle | ||||||
7 | School Band has become the youngest performing group in the | ||||||
8 | history of the "Chicago Jazz Festival"; the band was selected | ||||||
9 | as one of 2 middle school jazz bands to perform at the largest | ||||||
10 | band and orchestra conference in the world; the program was | ||||||
11 | also awarded a full endorsement from one of the leading | ||||||
12 | mouthpiece companies in the industry and was recently featured | ||||||
13 | in Downbeat magazine; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, In March of 2013, Roosevelt Griffin and the | ||||||
15 | Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School Jazz were honored to perform at | ||||||
16 | the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development | ||||||
17 | International Conference, where they received a standing | ||||||
18 | ovation from an audience of 10,000 educators, administrators, | ||||||
19 | and politicians from around the world; and

20 | WHEREAS, Roosevelt Griffin serves as a model of hard work, | ||||||
21 | integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of | ||||||
22 | Illinois; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
2 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
3 | we congratulate Roosevelt Griffin on the occasion of winning | ||||||
4 | the Golden Apple Award and wish him continued success and | ||||||
5 | happiness in the future; and be it further

6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
