HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Katherine Dunham Centers for Arts and
3Humanities (KDCAH) will celebrate 2012 as a banner year at the
45th Annual Black-Tie Gala/Silent Auction on August 4, 2012 at
5Deserts on the Boulevard in St. Louis, Missouri; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Miss Katherine Dunham, noted dancer,
7choreographer, anthropologist, and humanitarian, was born on
8June 22, 1909; she passed away on May 21, 2006, and would have
9celebrated her 103rd birthday this year; and
 
10    WHEREAS, 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the Dunham
11Technique Certification Workshop, which has certified 21 dance
12instructors, including 5 grandmaster teachers and 5 master
13teachers; 2012 also marks the 20th anniversary of Miss Dunham's
1447-day fast to protest the repatriation of Haitian refugees;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service released a
17forever stamp in commemoration of Miss Dunham's legacy as a
18master choreographer in Los Angeles, California on July 28,
192012; and
 
20    WHEREAS, 2012 is the year of the 29th Annual Dunham
21Technique Seminar, where individuals are taught not only the

1Dunham Technique, but learn about the philosophy, pedagogy, and
2choreography of Miss Dunham; and
 
3    WHEREAS, KDCAH will present awards to the Arbogast Family
4and Mr. Mark Kern for individual philanthropy; the Casino Queen
5for organizational philanthropy; and the Lifetime Achievement
6Award to Joan Myers Brown; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The 5th Annual Gala/Silent Auction will celebrate
8these extraordinary accomplishments and will be co-hosted by
9actor, dancer, and singer Debbie Allen, as well as Ron Himes,
10actor, choreographer, and founding director of the St. Louis
11Black Repertory company; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we thank and applaud the Board of Directors of the Katherine
15Dunham Centers for Arts and Humanities for keeping the legacy
16of Katherine Dunham alive, visible, and viable in the Metro
17East area; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the Katherine Dunham Centers for Arts and
20Humanities as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
