SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Paul B. Snider of Peoria, who passed away
4on November 19, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was born on October 17, 1918, in Cleveland,
6Ohio, to Bernard and Mary Haeckle Snider; he married June
7Milner on June 8, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; he was a World
8War II veteran of the United States Army Signal Corps from
91942-46, he served in Washington, D.C., and then established
10and was in charge of United States Army Radiophoto stations in
11England, France, and Germany; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Before joining Bradley University in 1955, he
13taught at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and the
14University of Oregon in Eugene; at Bradley, he served as
15chairman of the journalism department from 1956 to 1970, and
16was on leave during 1967 to serve as Fulbright Professor at
17Kabul University, Afghanistan; while in Afghanistan, he was an
18accredited foreign correspondent for Time-Life; and
 
19    WHEREAS, He resigned from Bradley in 1970 to be the
20founding chairman of the department of mass communications at
21the American University of Beirut, Lebanon; he also lectured in
22Iran and Cyprus; he returned to Bradley in 1972, as professor

1of journalism; in 1976, he received Bradley's Putnam Award for
2Excellence in Teaching; on his retirement in 1985, Bradley's
3Board of Trustees appointed him Emeritus Professor of
4Communication; and
5
6    WHEREAS, His education included a B.J. from the University
7of Missouri-Columbia; an M.A. from the University of
8Oregon-Eugene; and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, Iowa
9City; he was a retired member of the Society of Professional
10Journalists, Association for Education in Journalism, Phi
11Kappa Phi, Kappa Tau Alpha, and Kappa Alpha Mu; and
 
12    WHEREAS, He had published articles in many national and
13international scholarly publications and several U.S. and
14international newspapers; in 1996, Bradley journalism alumni
15established two endowed funds in his name, the Dr. Paul B.
16Snider Award for Teaching Excellence in Communication and the
17Dr. Paul B. Snider Journalism Scholarship; and
 
18    WHEREAS, As a journalist, starting in 1936, he worked in
19the newsphoto division of UPI (United Press International) in
20Cleveland, and after World War II was manager of the Detroit
21Bureau, resigning in 1951 to complete his education; after
22coming to Peoria, for several years he worked summers at the
23Peoria Journal Star and WEEK-TV, Channel 25; in 1973, he was
24host and producer of "Urban Issues" on WTVP, Channel 47; from

11976-79, he was the "Media Man," critiquing the media on
2WEEK-TV, Channel 25; and
 
3    WHEREAS, He had served as president of the Illinois Valley
4Press Club, the Board of Directors of the Illinois Heart
5Association, and was a member of the American Heart Association
6National Public Relations Committee and Faith, Hope, and Love
7(prison ministry); he also had been a member of the Peoria
8Human Relations Committee and foreman of a Peoria County grand
9jury; and
 
10    WHEREAS, For several years, he was a tutor in the Common
11Place adult literacy program; he was a member of the former
12Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Church and a Presbyterian lay
13minister; he was active from 1978 to 1999 in Cursillo in
14Christianity, including its prison ministry program; from
152003, as a member of First United Methodist Church of Peoria,
16he had been active in Caring Hearts, Loaves and Fishes, and
17Neutral Ground (HIV/AIDS) programs; and
 
18    WHEREAS, With his wife and children, he had traveled widely
19abroad; and
 
20    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Paul Snider is survived by his wife; his sons,

1David Snider and Myk Snider; his daughter, Kathie Downs; and
2his granddaughters, Julia and Lindsey; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
5his family and friends, the passing of Paul Snider; and be it
6further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the family of Paul Snider as a symbol of our
9sincere sympathy.
