SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Marshall "Zeke" Smith of Edwardsville,
4who passed away on November 18, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He worked at Western Cartridge Company and
6attended Shurtleff College, prior to the war; he enlisted the
7day after Pearl Harbor was attacked and served his country in
8the infantry in North Africa and the Middle East for
9thirty-four months; he was discharged as a staff sergeant in
10November of 1945; he remained in the Ready Reserve as a first
11sergeant until June of 1954; and
 
12    WHEREAS, He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American
13Legion; upon graduating from Washington University Law School
14in 1949, he opened a law practice in Wood River and had a
15general and trial practice which handled substantial workman's
16compensation cases; his lifetime in the law business was spent
17in the East Alton-Wood River area; he also represented the
18Village of East Alton, the City of Wood River, the St. Louis
19Regional Airport, and the Wood River Levy District for
20approximately 20 years; he also served as an Assistant State's
21Attorney for 8 years; and
 
22    WHEREAS, He will always be remembered for his love of

1telling "war stories" and his "famous" cigar; he enjoyed duck
2hunting, sailing, traveling the back roads of America,
3Dixieland music, spending time farming and cattle raising in
4the Prairietown area, and his everlasting fondness for his dog,
5Bunky; one of his greatest pleasures was driving friends around
6the farm in Prairietown; he will also be remembered for the
7many fall festivities at the farm; upon retirement, he spent
8much time reading, manicuring his lawn, raising flowers, and
9welcoming visitors into his home; and
 
10    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall
11and Estel Smith; and his sisters, Odessa Nelson and Margaret
12Barley; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Marshall Smith is survived by his wife of 64
14years, Virginia; his 3 sons, Mark, Eric, and Wyatt Smith; his
15grandchildren, Erica Gomez, Ryan Smith, Nona Lynn Smith, Mark
16Blunt, and Kimberly Cheek; and his six great-grandchildren;
17therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
20his family and friends, the passing of Marshall "Zeke" Smith;
21and be it further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
