SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Matthew W.
4Weikert of Jacksonville, who was killed in the line of duty
5near Orgun, Afghanistan on July 17, 2010; and
 
6    WHEREAS, SSG Matthew Weikert was born on May 15, 1981 in
7Sioux City, Iowa; he was the son of Richard W. "Dick" and Susan
8B. Kiel Weikert; and
 
9    WHEREAS, SSG Matthew Weikert was a member of the
10Jacksonville High School Class of 2000; he was also a former
11member of the JHS soccer team and a member of the First
12Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In August of 2001, SSG Matthew Weikert joined the
14United States Marine Corps, where he served 3 tours in Iraq
15over 4 years; he later joined the United States Army, where he
16served with the 101st Airborne Division; during his service
17with the Army, he completing a tour in Iraq and was currently
18deployed in Afghanistan; as a military team leader, he
19considered it his personal mission to properly prepare the
20soldiers under his command and keep them safe from harm; and
 
21    WHEREAS, In his spare time, SSG Matthew Weikert enjoyed

1hunting pheasant with his grandfather, playing golf with his
2family and friends, and spending time with his son, Jayse; and
 
3    WHEREAS, SSG Matthew Weikert is survived by his parents;
4his son, Jayse Schaecher Weikert; his sisters, Meghan Weikert
5and Melissa Weikert; the mother of his son, Megan Schaecher;
6his girlfriend, Danica Schild; his maternal grandparents, Rev.
7Wesley and Nell Kiel; his paternal grandparents, Richard A.
8"Dick" and Virginia Weikert; his aunts and uncles, Cathy
9Dartman, Kim Weikert-Moner, Steven Kiel (wife, Sheryl), Sheryl
10Mallehan (husband, Dave), and Scott Kiel (wife, Cathy); and his
11many cousins; and
 
12    WHEREAS, SSG Matthew Weikert's patriotism and courage will
13be remembered fondly by his loving family, his fellow soldiers,
14and the citizens of our grateful nation; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
17his family and friends, the passing of Staff Sergeant Matthew
18W. Weikert; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of SSG Matthew Weikert as an expression
21of our sympathy.
