SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Vern I. McCarthy Jr. of Oak Brook, who
4passed away on February 25, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Vern McCarthy Jr. was born on May 12, 1927, in
6Melrose Park; his parents were Vern I. and Vivien (nee Decker)
7McCarthy Sr.; he grew up in Maywood and River Forest; he
8married Janet Strahle on January 10, 1959, but divorced in the
9early 1960s; he then married Gaylen Broyles; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Vern McCarthy Jr. was employed with the family
11business, Vulcan Containers, Inc. of Bellwood, throughout his
12youth but was drafted into the United States Navy as World War
13II was winding down; after basic training at the Great Lakes
14Naval Training Station, he helped bring back naval assets from
15Japan; after his honorable discharge, he went looking for a
16college, but the flood of returning GIs filling up schools
17forced him to attend Southwest Missouri State College; he then
18became eager to return to Vulcan and left college after one
19year; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Vern McCarthy Jr. wound down his involvement with
21Vulcan Containers in the latter half of the 1970s, allowing him
22to fully indulge in his life's passions, politics and jazz; he

1was well known by his family and friends for his love of
2country and his love of jazz; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Vern McCarthy Jr. was preceded in death by his
4first wife and second wife; his sister, Irene Elizabeth
5Donohoe; and his stepmother, Dorothy; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Vern McCarthy Jr. is survived by his children,
7Kenton V. McCarthy, Leslie A. (Scott) Miller, and Brian P.
8(Tracy) McCarthy; his grandchildren, Brett, Blake, and Matthew
9Miller and Samantha and Sydney McCarthy; his sister, Rianna
10(Willie) Williams; his brother-in-law, Richard (Irene)
11Donohoe; and his dear friends, Richard Dolce, John Burnett, and
12Violet Bong; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15his family and friends, the passing of Vern I. McCarthy Jr.;
16and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Vern McCarthy Jr. as an expression
19of our sympathy.
