SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 802

 
2     WHEREAS, Water is our most valuable natural resource; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Tap water provides vital public health and fire
4 protection; tap water also provides support for our economy and
5 sustains the quality of life we enjoy; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Each American consumes approximately 50-plus
7 gallons of water a day on average; and
 
8     WHEREAS, All measures of a successful society, including
9 low mortality rates, economic growth and diversity,
10 productivity, and public safety, are all in some way related to
11 access to safe drinking water; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Every citizen is called upon to help protect our
13 source waters from pollution and to promote water conservation;
14 the United States Environmental Protection Agency suggests
15 that if each resident fixed all their household water leaks and
16 put in low-flow shower heads today, they could reduce their
17 water consumption by 25%; and
 
18     WHEREAS, True cost pricing of water is an important element
19 in present and future water conservation, in contrast to water
20 rates that are artificially low due to various subsidies; and

1     WHEREAS, It is critical to the future health and growth of
2 the State of Illinois that both private and public systems
3 continue to invest in our water infrastructure; the U.S. EPA
4 estimates that there is a $330 billion dollar gap in water
5 infrastructure investment throughout our nation; the State of
6 Illinois should continue to promote investment in its water
7 infrastructure both in public and private systems; and
 
8     WHEREAS, It is imperative that adequate funding be made
9 available for the State of Illinois to ensure that essential
10 research and analysis of Illinois' current and future water
11 needs can be done by organizations such as the Illinois Water
12 Survey and the State Regional Water Supply Committees;
13 therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
15 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we join with the rest
16 of the nation in celebrating National Drinking Water Week from
17 May 3 through May 9, 2010 and applaud the people who work hard
18 every day to ensure that the citizens of the State of Illinois
19 have safe, fresh, reliable, high-quality drinking water; and be
20 it further
 
21     RESOLVED, That we commit ourselves over the next year to
22 vigorously raising the consciousness of the public on the
