SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Knox College Professor Emeritus of
4 Economics and Business Administration Wilbur Fiske Pillsbury
5 II, who passed away on April 1, 2010; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He was born August 7, 1921, in Minneapolis,
7 Minnesota, the son of Herbert and Alma Thorson Pillsbury; he
8 married Katherine Wheeler on September 22, 1946 and she
9 preceded him in death on May 4, 1980; he later married Maxine
10 Tucker on December 15, 1984; and
 
11     WHEREAS, He graduated from Central High School in
12 Minneapolis in 1938, Dartmouth College in 1946 with a
13 bachelor's degree, Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth with a
14 master's degree, and received his Ph.D. from Indiana University
15 in 1952; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He was a veteran of the United States Navy,
17 serving with the rank of ensign during World War II; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Professor Pillsbury taught at Knox from 1949 until
19 1990; from 1956 until 1967, he also served as Dean of Men and
20 then Dean of Students; starting in the 1960s, he integrated
21 computers into his classes at Knox, developing the nation's

1 first computerized accounting curriculum; his book "Computer
2 Augmented Accounting" was published in 1970, followed by a
3 revised 1983 edition, "Microcomputer Augmented Accounting,"
4 co-authored with colleague William Ripperger; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The curriculum that Professor Pillsbury developed
6 at Knox was eventually used in more than 600 schools, colleges,
7 and universities in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia,
8 England, France, and South America, and he wrote and spoke
9 extensively about his innovations; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Among the many awards and honors he received was
11 the 1972 Outstanding Teacher of America Award, the 1981 Philip
12 Green Wright Prize for Excellence in Teaching, and the 1987
13 Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award; and
 
14     WHEREAS, At his retirement in 1990, the Wilbur F. Pillsbury
15 Scholarship Fund was created with a collective gift from the
16 Pillsbury children, his sons, Wilbur III, Roger, and Ronald,
17 and his daughters, Carol Pavlish and Jeanne Voigt; the Fund
18 provides financial assistance for Knox College students
19 interested in the field of business; in 2003, a set of stone
20 benches was placed outside Knox's Old Main to commemorate his
21 service to the College; and
 
22     WHEREAS, He was a member of Central Congregational Church

1 in Galesburg since 1949, where he taught Sunday school for over
2 25 years and held many leadership positions; he was a member of
3 the Galesburg Noon Rotary Club, the Soangetaha Country Club,
4 the American Economic Association, and the American Accounting
5 Association; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his infant daughter;
7 his parents; and his sister; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He is survived by his wife, Maxine; his three
9 sons, Wilbur F. (and Lorie) Pillsbury III, Roger (and Becky)
10 Pillsbury, and Ronald (and Patti) Pillsbury; his two daughters,
11 Carol (and Charles) Pavlish and Jeanne (and Scott) Voigt; and
12 his 13 loving grandchildren who were the pride of his life;
13 therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
15 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
16 his family and friends, the passing of Professor Wilbur
17 Pillsbury; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Professor Wilbur Pillsbury as a
20 symbol of our sincere sympathy.
