SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, 4-H is the largest youth organization in the State
3 of Illinois, challenging nearly 300,000 Illinois youth to
4 "learn by doing" with fun, hands-on activities teaching skills
5 for living; and
 
6     WHEREAS, 4-H is the premier youth educational program of
7 the United States Department of Agriculture and supported by
8 the latest research from Illinois' land grant university, the
9 University of Illinois; and
 
10     WHEREAS, 4-H is part of the University of Illinois
11 Extension and is available to all youth in every county in the
12 State; and
 
13     WHEREAS, More than 24,000 caring, nurturing adults
14 volunteer with 4-H youth by creating learning laboratories to
15 practice real world skills needed today and in the future; and
 
16     WHEREAS, 4-H enriches the lives of Illinois youth while
17 focusing on the mission mandates of science, engineering, and
18 technology, healthy living, and citizenship/leadership; and
 
19     WHEREAS, 4-H is committed nationally to engage One Million
20 New Scientists and One Million New Ideas by the year 2012

1 through promoting the concepts of science, engineering, and
2 technology in 4-H programs and activities; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Research by Tufts University has shown that 4-H
4 members do better in school, are more likely to see themselves
5 going to college, are less likely to engage in risky behaviors,
6 and contribute more to their communities; and
 
7     WHEREAS, 4-H offers youth supervised independence, a sense
8 of belonging, a spirit of generosity towards others, and an
9 opportunity to master life challenges; and
 
10     WHEREAS, 4-H members pledge their head, heart, hands, and
11 health to making the best better in their clubs, communities,
12 country, and world; therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that Tuesday, March 9, 2010
15 is 4-H Day at the Illinois State Capitol, saluting the rich
16 traditions of Illinois 4-H, the outstanding accomplishments of
17 Illinois 4-H members and leaders and the commitment to science
18 education for our future generations.
