SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Eugene R. Powell of Benton, who passed
4 away on January 17, 2010; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born January 25, 1919, in West Frankfort to
6 Edward and Leora (Richerson) Powell; he married Dorothy
7 (Carter) Powell on September 1, 1940; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He had served as Street Commissioner for the City
9 of Benton; he was a former hospital administrator, a veteran
10 serving in the Coast Guard and Navy, and a lab and X-ray
11 technician; after retiring from the hospital field he went into
12 mine construction, building mines in West Virginia and
13 Colorado; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Mr. Powell was a 50-year member of the Benton
15 Masonic Lodge 64 AF & AM; he was a Shriner, a member of
16 American Legion Post 280, a member of the Benton Kiwanis Club,
17 a member of the Liars Club, and a former Park Board Member; and
18 he had been Treasurer of the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery;
19 and
 
20     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; and two
21 sisters, Vernice Powell and Pauline George; and

1     WHEREAS, Eugene Powell is survived by his wife, Dorothy;
2 his two sons, Michael Powell and wife, Deborah, and Rodney
3 Powell and wife, Linda; his daughter, Patti R. Burlison and
4 husband, Ronald; his six grandchildren, Raymond "Ramie" and
5 wife, Vanessa Burlison, Rebecca Powell, Adam Powell, Jessica
6 Minton, Seth Powell, and Sarah Powell; his two
7 great-grandchildren, Noah Minton and Raymond "Ramie" Burlison
8 Jr.; his very special friends, Wendell and Betty Maulding and
9 Wilma Lockmiller; his three sisters-in-law, Audra Cox, Jean
10 Battershell and husband, William, and Bobbie Summers; his two
11 nieces, Suzanne Baker and Betty Aiken; his nephew, Wally
12 George; his loyal pal, "Bruiser"; and his special family, the
13 residents and staff of StoneBridge Senior Living Center, and
14 Dr. Parks; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
17 his family and friends, the passing of Eugene Powell; and be it
18 further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to the family of Eugene Powell as a symbol of our
21 sincere sympathy.
