SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of John Stolarz of Batavia, who passed away
4 on October 29, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born November 12, 1911, in Passaic, New
6 Jersey, the son of Polish immigrants who arrived in the United
7 States via Ellis Island; his birth was an interesting one, as
8 his mother went into labor while doing the polka at a local
9 dance, which may explain his love for the dance; he graduated
10 from Rutherford High School in 1932, where he enjoyed theater
11 and sports; he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in
12 Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1936 with a degree in psychology and
13 a minor in religious studies; he played on the school's
14 football team as a running back, playing against such notable
15 opponents as Vince Lombardi; and
 
16     WHEREAS, His first job as a young man was selling potatoes
17 from a wagon; after college, he worked in sales for DeWalt
18 Tools and Delta Faucets; he later took a job in Washington,
19 D.C., working for the Department of Defense where he helped
20 design and build pre-fabricated barracks that went up in World
21 War II to house troops; although he was a pacifist, he helped
22 rebuild Europe as part of the Marshall Plan where he was
23 integral in distributing tools and machinery; he showed small

1 groups of displaced peoples how to construct moveable workshops
2 inside delivery trucks; and
 
3     WHEREAS, After his time in Europe, he returned home and
4 found work in Milwaukee and met Dorothy Naleway; in 1951, they
5 were married; John and Dorothy moved to Batavia in 1962, where
6 he was recruited by Sears to be a sales manager; he retired
7 from that position in 1975; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Upon retirement, he became an active member of the
9 Batavia political community; in 1983, he was elected as an
10 alderman, serving the 1st Ward for two terms until 1991; during
11 that time he oversaw the construction of a playground in the
12 Woodland Hills subdivision; and
 
13     WHEREAS, John was preceded in death by his parents; his
14 beloved wife, Dorothy; and his daughter, Joan Kunzler; and
 
15     WHEREAS, John Stolarz is survived by his loving children,
16 Janet Althouse, Jean Sheffer, Ron Stolarz, and Jade (Richard)
17 Oliver; his seven grandchildren; his ten great-grandchildren;
18 his sister, Mildred Sanzare; his brother, Matt Stolarz; and an
19 amazing amount of dear friends; therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with

1 his family and friends, the passing of John Stolarz; and be it
2 further
 
3     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the family of John Stolarz as a symbol of our
5 sincere sympathy.
