SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of United States Army Specialist David A.
4 Schaefer Jr. of Smithton, who died while serving his country in
5 Baghdad, Iraq on May 16, 2009; and
 
6     WHEREAS, David A. Schaefer Jr. was born March 27, 1982, in
7 Belleville; he attended Freeburg High School in Freeburg and
8 worked as a diesel mechanic for Beelman Trucking Company in St.
9 Libory; he later worked for a trucking center in Troy; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Specialist Schaefer served with the Illinois
11 National Guard for 1 1/2 years before being called to active
12 duty in the regular Army; he was assigned to Company C, 1st
13 Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade,
14 Schweinfurt, Germany; and
 
15     WHEREAS, He was a strong-willed, very determined young man
16 and a loving father and husband; he fought for our freedom with
17 bravery and integrity and was proud to be a United States Army
18 soldier; and
 
19     WHEREAS, David Schaefer was preceded in death by his
20 paternal grandparents, Alan and Ada Schaefer; his maternal
21 great-grandparents, William and Violet Bumann; his

1 great-uncle, William Bumann Jr.; and his grandparents-in-law,
2 Aloma Y. Lawrence, Betty J. Sauer, and John Phillips; and
 
3     WHEREAS, United States Army Specialist David A. Schaefer
4 Jr. is survived by his wife, Shelly, nee Phillips, Schaefer;
5 his children, Jason Phillips, Logan Schaefer, and Savanna
6 Schaefer; his father, David A. Schaefer Sr.; his mother,
7 Rhonda, nee Ernst, Kemper; his sisters, Courtney Schaefer and
8 Theresa Schaefer; his brothers, Dwayne (Tiffany) Schaefer and
9 Adam Schaefer; his niece and nephew, Tiffany and Jerry Goodwin;
10 his maternal grandparents, Walter "Red" and Viola, nee Bumann,
11 Ernst; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard and
12 Sherry, nee Lawrence, Phillips; his brother-in-law, Jeremy C.
13 (Rachel) Phillips; his sister-in-law, Chrystal Phillips; his
14 grandfather-in-law, Robert Lawrence; and his aunts, uncles,
15 and cousins; therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
17 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
18 his family, friends, and a grateful nation, the passing of
19 United States Army Specialist David A. Schaefer Jr.; and be it
20 further
 
21     RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of United States Army
22 Specialist David A. Schaefer Jr. and his willingness to serve
23 his country, which led to him making the ultimate sacrifice;

2     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to the family of United States Army Specialist David
4 A. Schaefer Jr. as a symbol of our sincere sympathy and
5 respect.
