SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Virginia Metze of Oakwood, who passed
4 away on February 7, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Virginia Metze was born on February 8, 1934 in
6 Argenta; her parents were Ford Campbell and Grace (Campbell)
7 Phegley; she married Gernot Metze on July 13, 1962; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Virginia Metze earned her Juris Doctor from the
9 University of Illinois in 1976; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Virginia Metze was retired as the Director of the
11 Computer Center at the Materials Research Laboratory at the
12 University of Illinois; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Virginia Metze was an active member of her
14 community; she supported numerous causes, including the
15 University of Illinois Law School, the American Constitutional
16 Society, the ACLU, Common Cause, the Bill of Rights Defense
17 Committee, the Americans United for Separation of Church and
18 State, the Human Society of the United States, the ASPCA, the
19 Union of Concerned Scientists, Amnesty International, NARAL,
20 the Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, the Wilderness
21 Society, and Eco Partners, among many others; and

1     WHEREAS, Virginia Metze enjoyed politics, computers, cats
2 and dogs, cooking, reading, beading, knitting, and weaving; she
3 also desired to write a mystery novel set in a university
4 laboratory; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
7 her family and friends, the passing of Virginia Metze; and be
8 it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to the family of Virginia Metze as an expression of
11 our sympathy.
