SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/12-614 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Defines "global positioning device" as any electronic device that provides map or route information using an external network source and displays the information with the device's current location identified on a screen for navigation purposes, and defines "commercial motor vehicle attributed device" as a global positioning device that displays appropriate map and routing information for commercial vehicles based on current regulations regarding truck routes by allowing for the input of information regarding the weight, size, contents, or other regulated aspects of the commercial vehicle's load. Provides that a person operating certain classes of commercial vehicles on any highway in this State may not use a global positioning device for routing unless the device is a commercial motor vehicle attributed device.

1     AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5 Section 12-614 as follows:
 
6     (625 ILCS 5/12-614 new)
7     Sec. 12-614. Commercial vehicles; global positioning
8 devices.
9     (a) As used in this Section:
10     "Commercial motor vehicle attributed device" means a
11 global positioning device that displays appropriate map and
12 routing information for commercial vehicles based on current
13 regulations regarding truck routes by allowing for the input of
14 information regarding the weight, size, contents, or other
15 regulated aspects of the commercial vehicle's load.
16     "Global positioning device" means any electronic device
17 that provides map or route information using an external
18 network source and displays the information with the device's
19 current location identified on a screen for navigation
20 purposes.
21     (b) A person operating a class 6, 7, or 8, as classified in
22 49 C.F.R. 565.15, commercial vehicle on any highway in this
23 State may not use a global positioning device for routing
